mmouse You have to have a President. If no one comes forward. Let everyone know your parent group is finished. You would be surprised how someone will come out of the woodwork. If not, after one year of no parent group, believe me someone will step up to the plate. I target new parents. (kindergarten in elementary, 6ht grade in middle school) After all they are the future of their childrens school.
Thanks for the responses so far. My husband has no interest in handling the PTO position. He feels it's important but his work takes him out of town so much the way it is. Many parents also feel it's important esp. with all the budget cuts, but no one seems interested to take the step. Today, I'm speaking to a lawyer freind to look at the by laws and what it all means with regards to no pres. and VP.
We started this last school year with no President also. I was approached but had never held an office and didn't want to start out with the big one. So, here's what I did! My HUSBAND knew that I had wanted to run for an office but knew my hesitation with the Pres. position. So when I was approached by the VP, I told her my concerns and during the converstation it dawned on me how Perfect my husband would be for the position (he's very personable, GREAT with conflict resolution, has been in sales for years, educated, good strong Christian, etc...) so I suggested HIM! The VP thought having a man on the board would be great. So, I did a sales job of my own and pitched the idea to him. I promised to do any needed leg work (since I stay at home) and that I would handle anything he needed me to he would just need to preside over the meeting. It worked! AND after about 2 mtgs, he was more involved than ever! He has a wonderful rapport with the principal (he gets "in" where women have failed to in the past) and the other officers have really rallied around him & they are working great together! (fyi...there was one return officer from the past PTO regime who after 1 mtg never came back!! Her position was easily replaced and the year was GREAT!) All the current officers were voted back in and are really looking forward to a new year!
How about a previous presidentor officer? Do you all not take nominations from everyone, then have an election? Take into consideration if you have term limits, whether to not this person is allowed to be pres. more than one year since she was not VP. Try to think of someone who knows the most about what goes on, a veteran mom. You need someone who atleast has some knowledge of PTO. If you get a willing person, you might then offer to stay on as a consultant i ncase they have any questions. That is what happened with our board this year. Our past pres. offered to stay on just as a favor. But after about 2 meetings the pres. didn't invite her back. I think she felt intimidated. Since then though our PTO has fallen apart. We are looking into coming up with an election process for next year. Currently we have nothing. Officers stay in term as long as they please etc.!!! GOOD LUCK!

Our VP didn't want to step up, but she would have to be elect as prez anyhow. That's how I got to be prez, I was vp our prez stepped down, no one else would do it so the members nominated me. This year was pretty tough to find someone. We finally found a mom to take but I was on the verge of nominating teachers. Our by-laws say officers must have an child in school or be a staff member, we have plenty of both. Good luck!
To make a long story short, I've been the PTO President for the past two years at my childs school. Our by-laws don't say anything with regards if the VP does not want to move up or not. I know she is not interested in doing so, and only was the VP as a favor to me this past year. If there is no President or Vice President can there still be a PTO?
