First I'd say -- take it slow. Sounds like no one's done anything egregiously wrong. It'll work out.
Second, I'd say -- start the application process for your own Tax ID# as soon as possible. There are some tips on the PTO Practicalities section of the site.
If you can wait a couple of weeks, you sound like a perfect candidate for the National PTO Network (NPN) which we're debuting in late July. The NPN will help groups just like yours get "buttoned up" with a comprehensive start-up guide (and more expert guides to follow), access to a discount group insurance plan, discounts to our PTO shows, multiple subscriptions to our magazine and more.
Oh My...I have just found this site and wow! We are an elementary school who has decided to switch from a pta to a pto. Yes, I know you have heard this before. Here is my problem...around April 2002 we made the decision to switch. At this time we opened a new check book with the title PTO. All our profits went into it and we have our PTA checkbook down to $0.00. The only thing is that we didn't know we had to have a different tax #! Now what do we do? Out PTA checkbook has a $0 balance and we have a PTO checkbook with money to start the new year in September 2002 with! After reading all the postings, I see we have big problems! Can anybody help! Please note that this was our first year for this executive board and we had no one to advise us!
