These are the key things I learned when we did it:
1. You don't have to "break away." You and your PTA are adults, good people, independent, y'know? I undertsand how you can made to feel almost scared, but it's crazy. You guys can do anything you want.
2. Read the bylaws. That's all you have to follow. Everything else is up to you.
3. If you feel frustrated or intimidated by the PTA, just don't pay your dues. You'll be a PTO quicker than you'd believe.
This may sound harsh, but I got good and tired of all the silly stuff when we decided to change two years ago.
Good luck in making the "change". Our school is thinking about doing the same thing. If anyone could help with outlining the basic guidelines for making the switch our group would be very grateful. Thank you
I AM FROM AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN SO. CALIF AND CURRENTLY WE ARE AFFILIATED WITH PTA. WE ARE STRONGLY CONSIDERING CHANGING TO PTO AND I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE WHO HAS RECENTLY MADE THE SWITCH. HOW DID YOU BREAK AWAY FROM PTA? DID PTA COUNCIL COME TO YOUR SCHOOL AND TRY TO CONVINCE THE MEMBERS NOT TO GO PTO? ANY INFORMATION AND INSIGHT WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL.
