STONEY, thank you, this is getting to take a lot of energy from us. We were really wanting to start our Sept out with a pto instead of pta. So I'm hearing alot of things and good ideas. I guess we'll hold off on the pta membership for next year, and try to notice members about the switch in August. It sounds sooooooo hard. I can't stand to see that money be sent off when we could really use it at the begining of the year. Or should we give notice at the end of year in May when we take over the pta. We've already been voted in.

You'll hear a lot of different things. Look at your bylaws and your state bylaws. Those are the rules. I've never heard anything about any kind of one year thing at all. You could start a PTO today if you wanted to. Only real rule is that when you close down your PTSA officially, the state PTA has the right to take any funds you have in your official PTA account and any assets your PTA owns. The solution to that is to make sure your PTA doesn't have any money in its account and doesn't own anything when you disband. Spend the funds for the good of the kids or the school and you'll be all set. We changed over last year. It's not a big deal despite what you'll hear.

pto was created by Illinois
we are a pta, and tired of sending our childrens money to the pta assoc. we want to open a pto. However, the pta has told us that we have to close the books for 1 year before we can open under any other form. Does anyone know if that is true? They want all money to be given to them before they close the books on our school. We would like to turn our school into a pto ASAP. Our elections is in April, and we would like to know for the following year how to make this change over. Our school is in Illinois. We really need to get out of the pta, and put our childrens money into the school where it belongs.
