In my experience, there's no formal state or national organization at all. Many towns form town-wide PTO councils. Those can be very helpful for sharing ideas.
PTOtoday Magazine contains lots of great ideas for all types of parent groups. We mail more than 80,000 copies every other month. We also held the very first "PTO Show" just this week in New England. More than 200 parent leaders from 6 states attended and shared best practices. It was such a great event -- you can be sure there'll be more.
All that said, if you are looking to be part of a wide organization with wide-ranging state and national legislative goals -- PTA may be a great choice.
I'm a PTA Council president and we're looking evaluating our commitment to PTA. Do PTOs have any formal organization by region or state? Do districts come together for planning, sharing ideas, etc? Do you organize over legislative issues? Any leadership help? I'm sensing that PTOs are rather isolated except for internet interaction - is this right?
