forthekids, your advice pretty much matches what I'd say after doing the change. We even heard different rumors that we'd have to hand over things we own to the PTA. That didn't happen in our case. The change was easy and the PTA people were fine, even though they didn't want us to switch. We were ready to donate our things to the school like our ellison machine but we didn't have to.
The money thing is in your bylaws, so that's why you ahve to turn it over. Most of the times I've heard about (I've been invoved with 4 switches here in Wisc.), the money has gone to the school anyway.
However, if you really want to be sure you could start the PTO now on the side. Then the fundraising you do could be in the name of the new PTO and you could spend down the PTA funds (for school/group purposes). Hopefully by the time you disband the PTA, the PTA bank account will be zero and you'll have nothing to worry about.
We are curently a PTA and arelooking to change to a PTO-Why do we have to give ouor money back to the PTA? Can't a small buffer amount be turned over to the new PTO to start the year off?
