Our first day of school for 05-06 is August 17 and the last be will be May 19. We used to start after Labor Day and ended around June 1 but this schedule allows for the semester to end before Winter Break as well as giving us the same Spring Break as the local university and putting our graduations the week after the university's which people seem to like. I like the new system best. I'm not sure what it's like in TX but our hot season is early May-end of Sept so moving 2 weeks wouldn't make a difference for utilities either way.
The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris
When I was a child, school always started after Labor Day and we went until the end of the first full week of June. That's in northern Michigan. Somewhere along the line, the powers that be switched to around the 20th of August with an end date the Friday before Memorial Day. Last school year our superintendent let parents decide through a survey he put out. The choices were to keep the earlier start date or resume the after Labor Day start date. The results were split down the middle so he opted to do the same with the start date. We started the 2004-5 school year on August 31 and we were scheduled to be out June 7th. Then the teacher's union during contract negotiations added a few in-service days so our out date is June 10th. I would love to see our school's switch to a year round policy, but I don't think that will ever happen. Too many "old school" folks here.
We have an Alternate schedule (aka "year round"). We start around August 1 and this year we are getting out May 25 (1/2 day). We have a two week fall break, two week winter break, and two week spring break. If we have snow days to make up it will cut into the spring break. My college schedule is nothing like my kids schedule. I get two days off in the fall, usually the days I do not go and the week I get out in the spring is usually earlier than most schools in the area. So non-trads like me end up taking our kids with us. Also I do not start until about the third week of August. I feel like when the kids start school there are way too many good swimming days left.
A neighboring county also does the Alternate scheduling but they also have city schools there. The County schools got out May 15 and the city schools get out next week. It is causing scheduling conflicts with Parks and Rec and other programs.
I think ours is 180, I am not sure. You'd think as many jobs as I have applied for I would remember!
here school starts two days after labor day. The first semester ends at Thanksgiving time, second semester ends in January (after break) Third semester is April and the fourth ends the end of June. June 23rd is our last day. We have week long breaks in December, February and April.

We get out May 27, and return around July 12. We have year round school in our district and I love it. The kids seem to do much better. We are also a uniform school and that is a God send.
