Our small private school k-8 has a variety show. Our Music teacher and a parent from the Parent Association work together to select the acts. They range from serious to the silly. No admission is charged -- we also use the donation bucket. This past year we also sold refreshments -- they literally ate em up! We do not have judges - however the parent association does supply small awards for participation in the show - last year they were marble stars engraved with the date and event.
We don't do one of these at my school, but when I was in grade school we did one. The music teacher and principal had tryouts and picked not more than 2 hours worth of acts. No one got prizes but ribbons or something else small for participating. They sold pop and popcorn but did not charge admission. I like the idea of a donation bucket. In between acts, some teachers dressed as clowns and ran through doing funny little 15 second bits before the next act came on. One thing we did charge admission for was the annual play which had vocal performances by every class. This always got more students involved than the talent shows and every parent will pay to see their child perform. Good luck.
The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris
We have one in with our grades 1-3 every year. That is approximately 300 students and about 1/2 of them participate.
However, we call ours a Variety Show. As we do not base it on talent or award prizes. The kids can either perform in a group or solo. They can do anything they like (sing, dance, lip sync, gymnastics, magic, comedy, play piano, karate, read poetry, etc..).
They get about 1 minute per act. That sounds short, but when you have 75 acts they really can't be any longer then that or you would be there all night.
Our PTO runs it. We have 3 days of rehersals. Then on Friday the kids perform it as an assembly for the whole school and then at night they perform it again for family and friends.
We do not charge a fee to get in but we do have a bucket by the door and note that donations to the PTO would be appreciated. We get about $300 - $400 in donations.
I will tell you it is such a nice night. The kids and parents alike just love it. It is my personal favorite event to chair. Our Principal is the Master of Ceremonies.
We are a private school of about 375, with K3-8th. I'd love to start a Talent Show and wondered if any of you have one?
Who sponsors/produces it?
What admission price do you charge?
Does your PTO/Parents organization have anything to do with it?
Do you have judges and prizes?
I have a bee in my bonnet to get one started, and I've learned the music teacher wants one also. Problem is I think our vision might be different: I would love it to be serious talent and fun silly stuff the kids would love. I think she envisions a serious night of musical performance with judges. We'll see..
Just curious what others do?
