We have a used uniform school at registration every year. Parents send the used uniforms in with their name & asking price on an envelope attached to the item. The money is given to them after the sale. Some parents just donate the uniforms, and the proceeds go to PTO for running the sale. Any remaining items are stored in a closet near the school office for those in need or for accidents. PTO in turn usually gives the proceeds to the school office petty cash for those kids that need money for supplies, field trips, etc.
Ours is in the closet in the teacher's lounge. This seems to work well, because the teacher's know who needs, and who doesn't. It also helps if the younger kids have an "accident." Then they can change, and no one really knows.
We have sort of a "rack" in this little room. The rack is about 4 or 5 ft. long, double sided, with a shelf on top. On the hangars we have skirts, jumpers, blouses and sweatshirts. Pants and shorts are folded and placed on top. We have a large Rubbermaid-type box placed underneath where people can toss their donations and the chairman comes by every week or two and hangs up new donations. Periodically, she cleans out the junk and gives it to Goodwill. Parents pay $2 per item; given to the school secretary, who gives it to the Parents' Club.
I have read where some other schools have a Used Uniform Sale once a year, sort of like a big garage sale. That way you wouldn't have to have the year-round storage. Start collecting now for your "Sale" and then maybe the principal would let you have the Uniform Sale right before school next year. $2 an item is such a bargain; it would be a real service to your families.
Good luck

Are the uniforms left with the office or does the chair have a particular spot for "drop-off".
Many of our parent are free lunch program so I hope to keep it free but I would like to have a "Summer CLearance" table of sorts!
We used to have storage st the school in the Dean's Office but a new Dean was hired the first thing he wanted out was the uniforms. So to my home and another mom's home the clothes went. Even with the building of a new 3,ooo foot building we can't get a 6x4 closet!
I might just let is rest one more year then really rally for something!
Meantime, thank you!! I wish we (school/PTO) could work out something!
We have a uniform closet at our school--actually it's just a rack that is in the school office. All pieces are $2. We have a chairman who is in charge of this. She checks on it every few weeks & straightens up, culls out stuff for Goodwill. It's a great deal because our uniform skirts new are $35. the cash is given to the school secretary. It works out great.

Anyone run a program like this for families in need of uniforms? We have one but it needs improvments.
My main issue is collecting and delivering to the needy families. The office doesn't like collecting them in the front anymore and there is some concern with leaving the clothes with the teachers for the kids to take home (theft, losing, etc).
Our families are comfortable contacting us, that isn't the issue, getting the uniforms to them is the main issue.
