Good for you Rouse! Our RRW good also, but nothing like yours. I had scheduled a police officer to come speak to the kids(mon), had to change it to Friday, so Mon-I made red brick drug free pledge certificates and had the kids sign them, then built a "wall against drugs" in the display case(paper bricks, by the way) Tuesday- was wear red day Wednesday-wear your shirt backwards day "turn your back on drugs) Thursday-wear hat day"put a cap on drugs" Friday- police man came. I had wanted to do the balloon launch too, but had too many obstacles, even some teachers didn't like the idea of the police man coming to speak about drugs(I asked him if he was gonna talk about heroin use and teach them to clean their needles, he laughed so hard). Anyway I almost cancelled the whole thing, then I got inspiration from some one on the high school level and did the whole thing over the weekend and the kids loved it. I am already looking for ideas for next year. I might borrow some of yours... if you don't mind. One last thing, our school is 210 students K-5..Okay I'm done babbling now.
RED RIBBON WEEK SUCCESS!! Our balloon release to start off Red Ribbon Week was a huge success today. The day started off at 5:30 a.m. with 20 moms and dads at the school blowing up helium balloons for every student at our K-2 school - 1100 balloons to be exact! (Each student had placed an anti-drug note with their name in the balloon, in hopes that someone will find it and mail it back). We got all the kids out in the parking lot (no easy task with an elementary school this size) and let 'em go to cheers of JUST SAY NO!! Several local newspapers were there and even one local TV station! The news clip played at the noon and evening news! WOW, talk about everybody being so excited! Each day we have some goodies to give out - red ribbons, stickers, red lollipops, coloring books (we got free from off the internet). There are others things going on at the school that just add to the Anti Drug Theme -Bureau of Narcotics bringing a drug dog, and the Natl Guard bringing helicopter with an anti drug theme. We are ending up our week with a peformance by a Stunt Bicycling team (they have an anti-drug message) all paid for by sponsors! Just had to share our success!
Balloon releases are very controversial as they can be damaging to the environment, event with the so-called "biodegradeable" balloons. Some areas have laws restricting this activity.
Help! Has anyone out there ever been involved in a balloon launch? We are wanting to start Red Ribbon Week with a balloon launch. We have 1050 students, grades K-2, and I have no idea on how to plan this. Any suggestions? Thanks!
