Metzy I will try to help...I have spent alot of time working with our district on this.
In a nut shell....NCLB was passed around 2000. It was put into play so that all children/schools are given the same opportunities. alot it falls in with title one.
Part of NCLB is that if a school fails to meet requirements on testing a family has the opportunity to transfer their child to another school. If a school "fails" they have to come up with a improvement plan.
Another part of NCLB is that parents/communities have the opportunites to be involved at the school. this may be as easy as field trips.
NCLB also states that parents should be given the chance to help with school planning/improvement/advisory committees. Part of nclb is also funding, each school district is given so much money to help improve parent involvement, this money is distributed by poverty levels of school. For example in our district our school receives less than the others....part of this money (I believe 2%) is to be used for staff developement for involvement. That is also for parents, my district is actually sending me to a conference this week on parent involvement. they felt that it is benificial to our school and involvement.
NCLB also requires school report card results be posted. Schools need to release info in a timely manner to parents/communities. schools are to also have into play a parent involvement policy. I've just been asked to be a member of our district's No Child Left Behind committee. Anyone understand it in a nutshell? I know there is usually a difference in the 'book' and the 'actuality' of things... I'm reading everything I can get my hands on, but could use some 'real people-real words-real thoughts' discussion. I do not want to show up and be the least uninformed person there!
