Speaking of food conspiracies...maybe not giant, but probably be more widespread than just my former district in NV where this happened:
The district's food service director was caught with her hand in the till, $500,000 went missing from our school food service budget, an outside audit caught her red handed. An investigation revealed she had shanghied district food and workers to throw personal parties. She had filled the freezers with filet mignon for her own private use, then told underlings to grind in into hamburger when the investigators got close. The district was afraid she would sue if they fired her, so she was put on extended paid leave instead.
This woman also had also used her position to (have the district) purchase expensive packaging equipment and reconfigured our district system so that this equipment was used to pre-package meals at a central kitchen. The meals were then driven around to the schools and re-heated, using more specialty equipment. When her position with the district finally expired, she went directly to work for the packaging equipment company as a "consultant". This was just a few years ago, in Reno, NV, and this woman is probably now scamming other districts into investing in the same expensive equipment we did.
Speaking as a former food service employee, I've seen that some very bad crimes can occur in school food service. Be vigilant!
