Walmart and Spirit Wear

20 years 4 months ago #71373 by Michelle B
To be honest with you, I haven't noticed it much but I don't get to Walmart that often (Target is right up the street from my house) They have always carried our University (UNR-Sweet 16 BABY!! little pride there...)
But their selection on those items has always been fairly limited. I can't imagine that if they do carry any of our local schools, that they have done much with the selection.
I don't think it would cut into your profits too much though. Part of the sale of items for your local school, is the convenience of not having to go anywhere to get it.
I haven't heard from any of my units that this is a problem, yet.

My county doesn't have a Wal Mart. :( We go to the surrounding counties and I noticed the one I go to the most had their school stuff. I noticed a drink holder on a clearence spot and wondered how that worked. For the past few years they have had shirts and things. We make a good profit off of our "Spirit Sales" so I am glad we don't have to compete with Wal Mart.

Are the Walmarts in your areas getting into merchandise with the local school colors and/or mascots? (Not colleges, the local public schools.) I noticed it starting a bit last year, but am seeing more and more this year as the back-to-school stuff comes out.

I haven't paid close attention, but I've seen blankets, stadium seats, caps with our local high school themes.

Are they doing this in your area? Does it cut into any of your own plans? We pretty much only do a school T-shirt ourselves in our elementary school. But at the middle and high school levels, with so many organizations trying to raise funds, I wondered if it was competing with their efforts.
