I haven't gotten to in depth with how the Doors Open Program goes because we don't need it here. But I know that it is a partnership with several other programs. It talks more about how to set it up and implement it at the link but I think there are more than one option to do so.
The parent group at the link does it with volunteers.
This is something I've been thinking about a great deal. We have our ESS which is only for students who are referred for being academically behind. We are losing our 21st Century Grant which if I am not mistaken pays for Recreation for ESS and our Before and After School day care. The day care I think will stay the same. This grant also provided some great enrichments programs for after school. I would love to see that going.
I thought the legalities may be a little difficult. I as recreation director got paid $12.00 per hour. Teachers for ESS get more than that and aides get about $6.00 per hour. That sounds like a lot of money. Plus if it could be run through a parent group how could you pay for them. Would a set fee be necessary? Would you be able to charge what you would need too? Perhaps I am making it more difficult than it is.
I don't generally read the blog but I checked it out when pals posted about Joyce Epstein and noticed a nice piece on parental initiative to establish an after school program.
This issue is pretty important to me but thankfully, we have a district wide after school programs here in my county but I know that isn't the case elsewhere and I've been following closely, NPTA's Doors Open After School program. It's open to all parent groups to request information or even presentations on how to initiate an after school program at your own school. You can read more about it at www.pta.org/parentinvolvement/afterschool/index.asp
There are also other resources listed to support after school programs.
