Our school uses Indent-a-kid, but I think doing it yourself is cool.
Years ago I used to teach a program called Yello Dyno. I love the program, but stopped teaching because I was coming home crying after hearing stats on the terrible things that have happened in the world. I was really holding onto things.
The program teaches child safety through music. A Yello Dyno child safety advocate can come to your school & teach & you can purchase do it yourself ID kits. I even think that you can use it as a fundraise if I remember right.
The great thing I loved about the program is we did not teach stranger danger. We taught about Trickey People (that includes strangers and people you know). The reason being is that so many children are being abducted and abused by friends and family members.

. Now that I have been able to get more involved I am going to recommend it to my school.
We used the Identa-Kid-Program. They are supposed to have a very secure data base. I felt comfortable with it but some parents just didn't want to give out SS# and all that if it was going to be programed in a computer. So the next year we bought a machine and we now do it ourselves. The card machine costs around $3K(I think). It's more than paid for because it was used for ID cards using the child's school pics but also during events as fun cards and pictured with Santa. They are very popular.
Ahhh Our school uses the Lions Club they provide everything. Including the cards(they get from the sherif's station) and it is absolutely free of charge. Oops sorry one little cost to the school (not the PTO) refreshments for the club members and the a little picture of the kids from the school picture packages. The Lions finger print the children and fill out the cards. The school nurse helps by providing accurate weight and heights. The PTO will help out by affixing the pictures. Our school prefers to keep them on file at the school and they are sent home each summer. We send a waiver home with the children to collect the information and keep it on file. We do it all in one day throughout the day we call the sudents down by grade level (app. 550 students pre-k through 5th) We also combine the day with a stranger danger assembly. ( The police department and fire and rescue volunteer for the assembly)
I mean an ID program where the kids are fingerprinted, weighed, etc and the info is laminated on a card for the parents to keep in case of an emergency. Sorry about the misclarification.
