Our organization (HSA)is comprised of both our schools - elementary and middle. A little backround though. In NJ there are many districts both large and small. We are the "small". We have two schools that make up our district. (We do have 2 parochial schools but they do not comprise the "public" school district). Our elementary school is k-3 and our middle school is now 4-8. Our one building is too old to add on and an addition was added on to the middle school and the 4th grade was moved there 5 years ago. Most of us weren't happy about that but that is another long story. But what I wanted to say is that we are one HSA comprising BOTH elementary and middle school students and I post here all the time. I do not see any big difference with information coming from these boards that do not pertain to the middle schools in general. There are some differences since the kids are "older" and 7 & 8 graders sometimes see things as babyish or "not cool" but for the most part we work as one big happy family.
Hey all, I'm up for a middle school posting area. As I posted in an earlier thread, we just incorporated a brand new middle school PTO for the 2003/04 school year and it went great! Of course we will never have the same level of involvement as in the elementary school but as your kids move up to middle school, there is less to do anyways. We just finished up with our dinner dance/auction and made $15,000 to set our budget for the 2004/05 school year. In addition to this, we host a market day, potluck dinner for fall conferences, a dessert fare for Teacher's Appreciation week, car window clings for honor roll students and a McDonald's McCare Night. Who says it has to end. Keep the communication lines open and things can happen.
3 years ago, I happened on this website, the discussion board was kind of cruddy - but the updates have been such a god send.
I subscribed to the magazine immediately and was so impressed with the wealth of information, I was hooked.
I don't post as much now as I am a parent of a MIDDLE SCHOOLER (Hello?!? can we get our own section, puleeeze?) Middle school parent groups are a different animal all together.
High school is tough, because the booster clubs take over, so the fundraising is totally segregated.
I'm looking for ideas on how to communicate with middle school parents, artist-in-residence programs, career development programs, etc.
I still come back probably once a month now, just to see if any new ideas are out there and thankfully THERE ARE! I keep coming back.
Kathie - not to scare you off, because everyone is welcome here. Yet it may be that the type of interaction you want would be better served from another source - one devoted more towards academic and educational interests.
If I had a question like yours, I might post it here just as an extra source of information. But I would not expect great results since that's not the focus of this forum.
Maybe some of the others could suggest additional venues?
(But don't leave - we want you to continue to contribute!)
I'm not saying I won't come here but that my focus when my kids are in middle school is more on academics and there really isn't a place for that on this bb. I've been through the ms cycle twice already. And this "free for all" section is frustrating to post on because people frequently post over questions that may have only gotten one reply.
I've seen ms and hs questions here but there are so few of us that have older kids, the questions don't usually get a big response. I know, I'll do a test post and see what happens!
