I think the question here is Is it the PTO's job to charge for the use of the school. That is what my earlier response is in reference to. Scouting units use school cafeterias all over this great country, sometimes for weekly Den Meetings, but mostly for monthly Pack Meetings and for the Annual Blue and Gold Dinner.
Even if there were flyers sent home telling families about the bake sale, it is up to the school to make that call, not the PTO. Even if they seem to be in competition with the PTO for funds, it is up to the school to make that call. There is plenty of money out there for all of the groups, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, PTO's, Schools, etc.
A PTO is a group working to better the lives of its students, families and school. How is that any more or less important than what the other groups, especially the Scouting Units do?
Bottom Line? It is up to the school to decide who uses it's facilities, when, where and how they use the facilities, and if there is to be a charge. Believe it or not, there are schools who don't let their parent groups use the facilites either. It is up to the school, NOT the PTO.
A man once told me that a public school i just that - a PUBLIC school and the public has a right to use it - fundraiser or not - NO CHARGE. I agree with the man, the only thing I don't agree with is holding the fundraiser at the school. Other wise no they should not be charging the Boy Scouts or any other organization for tha matter.
The boy scouts fundraiser will only include boy scout families, some do attend that school. I am not sure on the details of the event but it is called a NO FEMALE BAKE SALE. The dads and sons make baked goods and invite the moms to buy or bid on the goods.
The boy scouts meet there for their den meetings every week and pack meetings(the 3rd Thursday of the month) are at the junior high. Due to Easter vacation, the pack meeting where this event would occur, will be on April 10th and the junior high is not available so they asked if they could have it at the Elementary School. "Someone" told them yeah if they split the profits with the PTO.
My opinion when I heard this was NO WAY. The boy scouts are just another group from our district just like the PTOs are. I am VP of the PTO at one of the other elementary schools and the Girl Scouts meet at our school and we have no idea what they do, one reason because it is none of our business!
What exactly is the Boy Scout troop looking to do for the fundraiser? If the Boy Scout troop is hoping to have a bottle return drive on Saturday morning (or similar) -- and the school admin says OK -- then I agree with Metzy.
But... is the Boy scout troop looking to use PTO resources (mainly people) to run the fundraiser? I also think it would be odd if the Boy Scout troop was running, say, a catalog fundraiser and being allowed to send mat's home with all the kids at the school (backpack express).
Not just NO, but HELL NO! The school doesn't belong to the PTO. The district has the right, the school may have the right, but the greedy PTO doesn't have the right.
Another PTO in our district is telling the boy scouts,that meet at their school on a weekly basis, that if they want to hold a fundraiser at the school they have to give the PTO 1/2. The boy scouts consist of boys from all 3 of the elementary schools in our district but meet at one school. Does the PTO have the right to do this?
