IMovePeople, are you still looking for information on selecting a new school in Houston? One of my new favorite resources is www.greatschools.net
You might be interested in a section it has selecting a new school. (From the home page, select "Choosing Schools".) They've got a neat article on "Choosing a New School in 7 Steps", other resources, easy links to school stats and records, AND it's customized (somewhat) by state.
Nothing's better than personal referrals, but this might help some in the research.
P.S. And the site references PTO Today as resource in some other areas of the site - so we know it's creators have good taste!
Bethandmiasmom - THANK YOU! Expensive (housing) I have found usually (not always) translates into awesome schools. I'd rather be house poor and have my kids in the best schools than have a nice house that didn't cost as much and have them suffer for it. When I get to Houston (Deer Park - though there are always FEW homes on the market there) you'll have to show me the PTO ropes there!
I would look at doing research on the net and local newspapers. They must have some sort of ranking. The test results of TAKS/TAAS must be out there as well. I live in the DFW area and remember the news ranking our area school districts. Perhaps you can contact the news stations.
Good luck! Get ready for a hot and humid summer!

Hey - good possibility we're leaving Chicago (and I was sooooooooooooooooooo looking forward to the PTO show here next year) and heading to Houston (but it's not too far to drive to Dallas!!!!!) I know that the areas of Houston are not zoned and I'd like the opinions of those most knowledgeable on the area - YOU. Have heard Ft. Bend and Deer Park have great schools - I need schools that have gifted programs and not just on paper. Any thoughts will be appreciated. (Realtors these days seem to not be allowed to discuss schools, good bad or indifferent.)
