Mom Project: Start a Tee Shirt Box

Here's a twist on that idea: My mother saved my Dad's old blue jeans and made a quilt out of "Grandpa's Pants" for my children. She used a nice fabric to match, but the best thing on it was the pocket that still had the leather lable on it! :D

A cousin of mine received such a quilt as a wedding gift made of shirts that his mother and the mother of the bride had saved (indpendentely). It's all I can do to sew patches on my kids scout uniforms, but think this is a great idea. If I save the shirts will someone out there make the quilts for me?

This is a great idea. I made a t-shirt quilt for my oldest son when he graduated from high school. You can also use old team jerseys from Little League and soccer. I used a few shirts from vacations and charity runs as well. He has it hanging on his wall now (three years later). It's a wonderful memento. I'm starting one for my second son who is going to start his senior year this fall. A friend of my mine made hers more specific by only including shirts from her dance recitals.

Recently a homeroom mom shared an idea with me that I just thought was wonderful, yet wished someone would have told me about years ago - so I'm sharing the idea with you all to share with others.

Start a Tee Shirt box - to keep all those many tee shirts that your child wears and outgrows through out the years: i.e. school tee shirts, camp tee shirts, athletic tee shirts, souvenior tee shirts from places you traveled to, etc etc. The ideas just grow and grow as your child grows up.

Now the project begins. ---- With those tee shirts you can make a beautiful memory quilt to send with them when your child goes off to college. They'll take with them wonderful memories, soft tees, and great conversation pieces. Just think of the conversations that will happen as others maybe bring one of their own - what a great gift. What a comfort for those homesick moments also.

I saw a few sites on the internet that will give instructions on making these Tee Shirt quilts. Pass this idea along to others and maybe we'll see a generation of kids bringing quilts to college.

Diane :)
