Thanks for the insight on campaigning.
We have never, in the past, had more than one person for any of the Exec positions so it was always just a formality. This Pres. has alienated so many of the worker bees (I am one of them, who has been working since the beginning when the organization was formed)that none of them want to continue if she is Pres.
She has not done a particularly bad job just not one to get her hands dirty with the grunt work but she certainly steps up to take all the glory.
The current VP, running for Pres against her, has had a horrible year with this woman and chose to run against her. The arguing and yelling from our Pres has gotten quite a few Moms feed up with the PTO. They want to have NO part of it. I don't blame them but remind them IT'S for the Children.
Thanks to all and good luck to all running for the various Positions.
Our PTO is also holding their annual elections this month, and we are hoping that they are much calmer than last year.
According to Robert's Rules of Order, your PTO should have a nominating committee to choose the BEST candidate for each office. That way, you don't have competition between parents.
This is how we run our elections....the nominating commiteee chooses a slate of candidates, then at the general meeting, we allow nominations from the floor. Every year this has gone without a hitch...but last year we had a parent who wanted to run against me for VP. She called mothers at home to tell them not to vote for me, and generally bad-mouthed me to anyone who would listen. I was the nominated VP...one of her friends nominated her from the floor, and we had a ballot vote. She LOST! We haven't heard from her again!
But to answer your question...I think campaigning is wrong. It only creates hard feelings among people who should work together for the school and the children.
We are looking for people to run for board positions - pretty much if you're willing to do the work you get the job. I am "running" for president for the upcoming year - elections in 2 weeks. We take nominations from the floor on election night and to be honest with you if someone else steps up I'll be glad to hand over the work I've don so far. Having seen posts on this site of what happens when more than one person wants a position - I'm not willing to go through that. There is plenty of work to go around and be shared, I would be happy to be vice president, secretary, committee chairperson or dog catcher if that's what they want to call me. I just want to do the best for our kids and the school that I can and I don't care about titles. I wouldn't get involved in mud slinging, but on the contrary have seen what happens when you take the high road in some cases. My point is only that you can do the work no matter what you are called, you just have to decide how important it is to YOU, in your heart - to hold a position. You asked - that's my opinion - I'm sure everyone has their own and none is more right than the other - it's all up to you and I wish you every success in whatever you decide is right for YOU!
