Do you have any parents that are lawyers? I would be very interested in knowing how incorporation would protect the officers in the event of a lawsuit.
I know of other groups that resisted incorporation, thinking that it would somehow diminish the cordial spirit of the organization. If the only people you might need to worry about suing were members of the group, that might have value. But if your PTO pays for the bus for a field trip, and the bus driver has an accident, the cordial spirit of your organization will count for zilch with the other driver's lawyer.
This forum provides a lot of great advice. But don't forget the value of talking to a lawyer, or a tax advisor, or other qualified professional. I am neither a lawyer nor a tax advisor, and I do not promise that any comments I make in either arena will be any better than gibberish.
Hi. Our school is currently looking into the possibility of incorporating. DOes anybody know of a PTO that has incorporated, where it is, and any of the issues they have had to deal with? We seem to have some resistance to incorporating. Thanks.
