I must say I agree with double checking your bylaws. I read ours 3 or so times before I finally found the clause regarding vacancies for officers. It was not in an obvious place. (Sorry, don't mean to treat you like a dummy! But it's really hard to believe that it's not mentioned - especially in new bylaws!)

If there truly is nothing in the bylaws, I think moving the VP to Pres. is pretty safe & accepted. My "gut" feeling would be to have the Exec. Board appoint a new VP.

I hate to ask but, are you sure it is not in your bylaws? What is in the job description for your First VP? They are usually designated to serve as President in the presidents absence. (I guess that would apply here) and it may mention there what to do in case of a resignation of the president.
This is general but, in almost all of the bylaws I have seen (only about 30 or so)the position may be appointed by the executive board. None of them advocate another election.
Is your 1st VP willing to take the position?

Thanks Marion, but no our by-laws state nothing about a vacancy during the year. Only things about spring elections are mentioned. I'd really like to follow a procedure by the book as it is a rather sensitive situation. Still need help!!!

Do your by-laws tell what to do in this situation? Our by-laws state that the VP assumes the role of President. (I can't remember what happens to the role of VP though)

Our President quit this week and we are in a situation of what to do. Should the other officers that want to, move up? Should new names be submitted and who should vote on that? Should the office be appointed until the next election in the Spring?? Our by-laws only state info. about spring elections. This is only our 2nd year as PTO and with our general guidelines by PTO, it's strictly up to each individual PTO what to include. This is a very sensitive issue among the board and committee members, so going by the book is a must. But what book????Help....

****There are absolutely nothing in our by-laws about this, so this is some thing that will definately have to be ammended.
