Our school does this also, but it's called "Citizen of the Month" because the award is based on good citizenship.
One person from each class is selected. The parents receive a formal letter from the Principal. The teachers make a big deal of it, there are announcements over the PA system, it's listed in the monthly newsletter, etc.
The group is honored at a monthly awards ceremony held from about 7:45am-8:15, maybe not quite that long. We have it in our library so it's a bit like an exclusive breakfast reception. They serve donuts and orange juice. It's attended by the Principal and Vice Principal, the students getting the award, and the parents. The principal calls the kids up grade by grade and they get certificates. Pictures are taken for the year book and other uses.
It's a nice ceremony. We usually have 100% turnout (of the families involved) since it's right before school starts.
I believe our kindartgen classes also have Citizen of the Week awards, but this is more of an internal class deal.
The teachers of our school pick a Citizen of the Month and Student of the Month for each class. The student's certificate and photo is hung in a display case in the main hallway for a month. At the end of the month, we have a ceremony (at the end of the school day) where the principal presents the certificate to each child. In addition, each winner gets to pick a book (the teachers order a selection of books)
OUR PTO AND THE PRINCIPAL WORK CLOSELY ON THIS ONE! THE TEACHERS PICK THE STUDENT OF THE MONTH, THE PRINCIPAL GIVES THE LIST OF NAMES TO THE 1ST VP. AT OUR MONTHLY MEETING THE 1ST VP CALLS EACH CHILD UP TO THE FRONT OF THE MEETING (USUALLY DONE AT THE END) AND GIVES THEM A CERTIFICATE CONGRATULATING THEM ON A JOB WELL DONE AND A PIN THAT SAYS STUDENT OF THE MONTH. WE THEN ASK THE CHILDREN TO STAND TOGETHER AND TAKE A PICTURE AND PUT IT IN THE TOWN NEWSPAPER. THIS IS OUR SNEAKY WAY OF BRINGING PARENTS INTO THE MEETING AND SEEING WHAT THE PTO DOES AND OCCASSIONALLY GETS US A NEW VOLUNTEER.GOOD LUCK!
JUST WONDERDING IF ANY OTHER SCHOOLS OUT THERE DO THIS. WE USED TO DO THIS IN FLORIDA WHERE I CAME FROM ON A MONTHLY BASIS. I THINK IT WAS A GREAT IDEA AND THE KIDS REALLY ENJOYED IT. WE HAD TEACHERS PICK THE
