Thank you all for letting me know what vice-presidents should do I feel as though I do more than our president I am in the school everyday and our president has only been to the school 2 times this year and then calls me when shw needs to know what needs ordered and I send aand make all the fylers that go home maybe next year I 'll run for president beacause I would do things in the more organized approach and not have everyone else do it all.Thanks again
I'm the President of our PTO and our by-laws are pretty standard, much like Michele C's except our VP doesn't automatically become President-Elect:
The Vice President/ shall:
1. Act as an aide to the President.
2. Perform the duties of the President in the absence or inability of that officer to serve.
3. Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Board.
4. Coordinate the general activities of any Special Committees created by the Executive Board.
It really can be a ill-defined role, depending on the President and the PTO officers, but that flexibility can also be valuable.
In our case, the VP is willing to step in as a "floater" on any project. We have a great guy in the position now, totally willing to serve any support role needed. Generally, we wait until we have the officers and project leaders identified and then see where we need the most help. If he has a particular area of interest, he's welcome to speak up and say, "In addition to my general role, I really want to work on (whatever) this year."
Here's what it boils down to for us. The VP:
1) Acts as a floater to help out where needed (at the coordinator officer level) - we all act as "worker bees" as well.
2) Attends any special meetings with the President like budget preparation or planning
3) Rotates with 4 other officers who have an assigned day to go by the school and sort PTO mail & deal with PTO issues
4) Runs meetings in the President's absence
In our PTO, most of the officers work outside the home, so have less time to give -particularly during the day. It serves us well to share the load, and, luckily, we have a group that works well together.
I am a newly elected President and have served as vice president as well. When I was vice president our Pres. at the time would not let any one do anything of importance because she was very controlling. Now that we have a new board of officers we are taking a different approach. I feel that what each of us do is of equal importance and if there is something that needs to be done as long as one of us does it that is all that counts. Our vice pres. sets up and plans all of our assemblies, helps plan the budget, helps plan the agendas. We really work as a team and it seems to be working great:)
It really depends on what your by-laws say as to what your responsibilities would be. If they are sketchy, perhaps it is time to revisit and amend them to include a more informative section as to the responsibilities and areas of concentration should be.
Different organizations have different expectations of the officers. At our organization, the president elect is like what a vice president is in another organization. Our bylaws state:
Section 2. President-Elect: Assists the President. The President Elect shall:
a. In the absence of the President, perform the duties of the President.
b. After having served for one year in this position, shall automatically become the President of the organization.
c. Perform such other duties as are assigned by the President or the Executive Board.
d. To be eligible to serve as President-Elect, a person must have been a Voting Member of the organization for at least one-year.
Doesn't say much et? Well, I also serve as writer and editor of our PTO newsletter, oversees fundraising activities and assists with the guidance and support of room parents throughout the school. Sounds like little, but there always seems to be something coming my way. That is where the #C above comes in (Other duties as assigned by President)! Sometimes she tells me what needs to be done, sometimes I just take the initiative and go ahead with it, but I always pass ideas by her first to make sure we are in agreement in approach and intended outcome.
could someone please tell me the responsibilities of th vice- president because I have not a clue and I feel like I just do what I see that needs done I do alot but it seems as if I should be doing more to help.
