LIbrary Programs

Our school has implemented some great library ideas. We started off with "Pennies for Pages" We asked people to send in pennies and suprisingly enough the response was overwhelming. We did ask the PTO to provide incentive gifts for the "winning" class. In the spring we have started a chocolate bunny sale where all the proceeds go directly to our library and Accelerated Reader Program. I am the Pto president this year and we have decided that the PTO will only have one fundraiser in the fall so we do not conflict with the library fundraiser. We have raised over $13,000 for our library in two years and now the library has it's own account seperate from the PTO. We do not have a paid librarian so all of the library duties are handled by our wonderful volunteers, (the principal handles the money). Good Luck with you projects!!

We too have book fairs at our school. The teachers are given a wish list and the parents can purchase a book for the classroom with a name plate from the child in it.

We have a birthday club at our school. A family can donate a book to the library on a child's birthday. The family can choose the book to be purchased or the librarian has a wish list to choose from. Once the book is purchased, a donation sticker is placed in the front of the book with the child's name and birthday.

Our librarian also uses funds from Scholastic Book Fairs to purchase books. We have a book fair in the fall. This has been very successful in our school. The book fair is open two evenings for working parents to attend.

Our PTO has just formed a new library commitee. I am the chairperson - and the commitee....We hope to aid the librarians - we have two - an elementary and middle school - with some sort of permanent help for book shelving and reading times - also do some writer visits and start a book donation program - we are at ground zero - lots of ideas but not concrete direction - please send all ideas suggstions - what worked and did not work. Also our school is 1/2 gifted and talented and 1/2 multi-handicapped and hearing impaired - so we need to do a lot of inclusion...quite a script I know - but we want to give it a good shot...please help us...! Thanks
