I'll start. I am still in one PTO and one PTA but mostly serve as "just a volunteer" or chairing a minor committee, because I'm focusing my efforts more on district level activities. Both my kids are athletes, so I get drafted into that stuff now and then, but mostly I'm focusing on:
1) Campus Academic Advisory Committee (CAAC)- middle school
2) Campus Academic Advisory Committee (CAAC) - high school
3) District Academic Advisory Committee (DAAC)
These are formal advisory groups that meet monthly with the principal (CAAC) or district officials (DAAC). The DAAC also has several substantial subcommittees, such as the one that creates the district calendar for the next year, technology planning, strategic planning, math, advanced academics, wellness, etc.
4) {School District} Foundation - this is a charitible educational foundation created expressly for fundraising to support the school district. It goes after big corporate relationships, has an annual golf tournament, hosts a major "jeans and jewels" community dinner fundraiser. It's a fledgling group and I've only recently become a board member, so we're all learning.
I know a lot of my friends are in band or orchestra or althletics groups that are every bit as demanding as PTO/PTA.
Just curious about what other school organizations some of you are involved in and what role you play? Band boosters, athletic parents, school advisory committees?
I find I apply a lot of knowledge and skills I honed in PTO offices to these other organizations, and thought it might be interesting to share.
