I gave all of this information to the principal and he is was happy with all of your input. He's going to ask the school board first before we try to recruit volunteers. I'll keep you posted!
I found this website if anyone else needs some info:
I work for the police department and we hire the crossing guards. My children's school district uses teachers and fire/police volunteers, but we live in a much more rural area with less traffic than where I work.
I highly recommend not using kids as crossing guards for the simple reason that the whole point of having them there is to stop a moving car. And I wholeheartedly agree that the PTO should not take on the liability in this. Heaven forbid the crossing guard, or any of the children, was injured or worse during the course of their duties. Then you'd have to think about lost wages, worker's comp, psychological impact, etc and who/how will take responsibility for long term care. Lots of things to think about. It should be up to the school district or local government. I like your idea about donating money. You might want to look into or suggest the school district look into grants money. You never know what might be available.
Hi, my child's school crossing guards are employed by the District. Our school policy is to be background checked, and finger printed before working with children. In any case I would hire someone you can trust. Good Luck hope everything works out for your school.
Our school is Pre-K through 5. We have the older kids as crossing guards. Of course, the town that I grew up in had then and still does, adults who are employed by the school district. Usually retired people who are looking for a few hours a week and enjoy seeing the kids.
After all of your comments and research, I think we're going to try to come up with a dollar amount to donate for the school to use towards hiring crossing guards.

None of our schools have them in our district. Maybe with all of this information I'm getting it can be addressed at a school board meeting before we bring it up at PTO.
