Alternative to Field Day

17 years 1 month ago #137947 by bettina
Our school changed to Fun Day and do activities like sack race, tug a war, parachute, balloon toss, kick ball, etc. Our PE teacher plans it all and the junior high students come over and helps out. Our principal is out there running a station also. The teachers take the kids from station to station. PTO provides concession stands and then we buy popsicles for the students at the end of the day.

Well--I guess we have 2 folks in the PE department. I'm not sure how they do it...they do get TONS of volunteers and the PTO works the snacks and refreshment tables. I know the PE teacher has received about 110 volunteers to show up that morning...she must have had the stuff from another place she worked...I'm not sure really how she does it.

dlf - We only have one person in our PE department, and that's our gym teacher. There's no way he could plan and execute Field Day. This has been a PTO event for approximately 15 years. We rely on parents to help plan Field Day and also volunteer on Field Day.

You know our field day has always been the PE folks with volunteers and we provide a hospitality table and the snacks for the children. I was surprised to see by so many that his was a PTO event...

Hi,
We too have been exhausted this school year. I actually went to our Principal and explained that since this is a school event, someone at the school needed to organize field day. I provided her with all the information from the previous year to start with. We agreed that PTO would provide snacks during the day and organized the field day t-shirts.
After speaking to the principal she was able to contact our local high school and the high school nation honor society students acutally came and ran all the games for our school. This was such a win-win for us, the high school kids loved it and our PTO only had to run the concession area. Our high school kids have to graduate with community hours, so this really worked out well for everyone! We had field day last Friday and for once I was able to leave early and enjoy the event with my 2 girls!!

Our Field Day is ran and planned by the gym teacher. We financially support and volunteer. Maybe try to get her involved, she might love the idea.
