We started a neat bread-giving program, Spread the Bread, through our community and the PTO to honor our heroes and help those in need after September 11th--and it was a huge success--It helped children make a little more sense of the world through conversations while baking and then offering their baked bread back to “Bake a Difference.†It really was a community builder and a way to teach kids about the importance of making a difference in this world. Thought I would share...
Spread the Bread is a grassroots community bread-giving initiative that gets anyone and everyone back into the warmth of their kitchens to bake bread-any kind of bread – for others. The bread or breads (if you do it with a group, organization or school) are then wrapped like a gift and tied with a note, saying, poem or artwork of “happy good wishes.†They are then collected and spread back into the community to honor our heroes: police, firefighters, veterans and soldiers and to help those in need: the sick, elderly, food pantries, shelters, Meals On Wheels programs, etc…
When the breads were collected at school during our first bread drive for National "Make a Diffference Day" in October 2001, they came in all different shapes, sizes and flavors--people had a blast talking about what kind of bread their family made. With the help of so many Wayland families, we have spread over 10,000 loaves of bread in our community--With the help of so many others...the word spread and so did the bread, from Wayland and around the world....and now hundreds of thousands of breads have been spread.
Yes, a loaf of bread has grown into an international grassroots initiative --loaded with culture, history and heart! It’s fun and easy and so very powerful. It only takes one loaf to make a difference in someone’s life.
It's a great project for PTOs to embrace--and you can make it your own--
spread breads to celebrate your teachers, your heroes, a holiday, a community event,--to help those around you in need of food or a smile...
