Goalie and I are on the same board, but I think this might apply to more organizations than just us so I'm posting rather than relying on email.
Our PTO has over $15,000 in overage from previous years. Our budget this year balances (21,000 estimated income, 21,000 estimated expense). We also are making purchases now out of the overage funds that have been caried over.
We try to plan on spending what we have coming in (21,000), and use the overage for larger purchases when needed.
Where do they fit in this program. Are we looking at it wrong?
Are you trying to manage to a zero budget? Any additional details you can provide would be helpful. Also feel free to contact me directly at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
How can I account for a discretionary fund in the budget? We have some overage from last year and we have broke it down to show what we want to use it for. However, I can't find a good way to account for it in the budget.
Thanks so much for the nice feedback! To answer your questions:
1. I would recommend putting both debits and credits under the same category so you can see the net number. For example if you spend money on a fundraiser you want to be able to see in one place the expenses and income for the fundraiser so you know how much money you made.
Finance Manger can handle both debits and credits against either an expense or an income category.
2. Try looking at the budget and not the budget report. There is a details button that will show you all the transactions for a category.
