I turned over our checkbook to our principal at the beginning of last year. Our PTO is very small and over the last couple of years, our officers have moved onto Middle School and have never been replaced. The principal keeps the checkbook locked in her office and the secretary can also sign checks in her absence. I had everyones names removed since they were gone,and do not feel that I have the time to be solely responsible for the checkbook. So I guess you would say that the principal is our treasurer...It works.
Also, the checkbook is always at school, not at someones house.
I don't know if it is usual or not, but we are incorporating this into our group. We have a great prinicipal that is very involved w/our group. We have put into our bylaws that the principal will serve as vice-treasurer w/check signing powers. For us, it is just easier. We had a hard time w/ our treasurer last year-could never reach her when we needed a check, she would forget to send it to school w/her kids like she said she would, etc. However, if your principal is a micromanager, it might get a little sticky if you try to get a check from her/him for something she/he doesn't want to give it for.
The principal at my last school was an authorized signer along the the PTO's VP. Every check required two signatures so neither one had absolute power over the account.

Our principal, who is very involved and a micromanager, is a signer on our PTO bank account. She also wants the school secretary to be on the account too. Is this normal? Isn't there some conflict of interest with this?
