Parent Involvement Requirements
Parent Involvement Requirements for Districts and Schools Every school receiving funds for No Child Left Behind funding for parental involvement is required to:
Develop with parents a written parent involvement policy that is then distributed to parents and made available to the local community
Hold an annual meeting of parents to inform them of the policy and their right to be involved
Conduct, with the involvement of parents, an annual evaluation of the content and effectiveness of the parent involvement policy under No Child Left Behind in improving the academic quality of schools.
Offer a variety of times for parent involvement meetings and, if necessary, with Title I funds provide childcare, transportation, or home visits.
Involve parents in an organized and ongoing way in the planning, review, and improvement of school programs.
No Child Left Behind legislation requires schools to develop with parents a school-parent agreement that outlines actions to be taken to improve student achievement.
Increase opportunities for parent involvement in the school by helping parents understand state academic standards.
Provide materials and training for parents, teachers, pupil services personnel, and other staff to foster greater parent involvement and underestanding of No Child Left Behind and its features.
Integrate activities with other programs.
Identify barriers to greater participation by parents at the school.
Coordinate and integrate parental involvement strategies.
Build the schools’ and parents’ capacity for involvement through the implementation of required parent involvement activities. NCLB Section 1118e

We had a principal who really did not want parents in the school. It got so bad that parents actually took their children out of the school. Enrollment steadily declined during a tenure. Nobody threatened to do so, they just did it. Your principal should be glad that there are dedicated parents that are willing to come to school and help out. Without the support of parents school could be a chilly place. I hope everything goes well tomorrow. Take a copy of the parent component of NCLB with you. Never hurts to have your facts in black and white.
I have a one-on-one meeting with her first thing tomorrow morning. I am basically just going in there to tell her that as the Volunteer Coordinator and Fund Raising Chairman I have been told that I will be receiving no help from the parents that are being shut out. I am going to ask for her suggestions as to how I should counteract this reaction and go from there. After the meeting is over I will continue to do research on this topic and what can be done. In the meantime I, as a parent, will be inside the school which is more than she wants.
You have all given me some really great suggestions, help and support which I so desperately need. If you can think of anything else you may want to add, please do. I will be checking up on this topic frequently. And to all of you that responded: a big, big THANK YOU!
grls, you said "she has further shut the parents out of the school and has stated that they are not a part of the school community. We, as parents, are more of a liability than an assett."
This goes counter directly, to several dutys a head of school has, inclding, promoting parent and communtiy relations, and doing things to promote welfare of the children.
Go to your state dept of ed website, search word PRINCIPAL DUTIES or RESPONSIBILTIES or QUALIFICATIONS, find out what the job SHOULD consist of in your state, then search word COMPLAINTS, and if you find the current position of the principal is not that which the state reqires, document your experience and send off a complaint to the state dept of ed, and let THEM do the due diligence and try to straighten out the confusing elements of this seeming paradox, a principal that wants no parent involvement.
