Has your principal been there a long time? Has she acchieved her tenure? That may be your answer? Sometimes if they are new they really watch what kind of message they send out to the board, superintendent. etc. I don't see anything wrong with it but wonder if there isnt more to why she said no. I have a new principal that wouldn't take a pie in the face two months ago yet I got him to wear a chicken hat at the school board meeting in honor of our Read Across America celebration...he ended up on today's front page of the paper!!

I don't understand what the big deal is. I think Regana's idea is okay. It is suppose to be fun. Not saying that pizza parties aren't but it seems that everytime you turn around its a pizza party. Regana whatever you do I wish you much success!!!!

Please don't be discouraged by this...Our prinicipal would have also turned it down I'm sure and the reason is that she is trying to build the concept of respect for the students in the staff and teacher base. Having them "eat worms" etc..may not have been in line with their thinking as to how to ensure that the staff and teachers maintain an authoritative base. I understand and agree with that...but perhaps you can get her to agree to
-lunch with the prinicipal
-featured presentation at whatever next awards ceremony there is
-pizza party paid for by the PTO
anything that encourages them to feel accomplished but not subordinating the staff etc......

We have an unenthusiastic, "stick-in-the mud" principal. We recently planned a readathon fundraiser based upon many posts I researched here and on the internet. One of the incentives was going to be that if the students read 10,000 books, she would eat worms (really only gummy worms) and the assistant principal would eat dirt(really chocolate pudding with cookie crumbles). She okayed the readathon, but said "the eating of worms and dirt cannot be a part of the celebration." According to her, it would get the kids too juiced up and excited. Uhh- that's point! We're trying to get them excited about READING!! She didn't even give us any alternatives. Any ideas on what else we could do? I've thought about going to the Superintendent, but I don't want to seem disloyal.
