PTO Mission Statement

When we established our bylaws we included a mission statement for our group. While I believe we have followed it for the most part, my co-prez and I decided to read it at our first meeting before we looked at the proposed budget. It was a reminder to everyone present as to why our group exist and the goals we had in mind when we were established. It helped us look at each item on the budget and see if it really followed that mission. It was also an opportunity to look at our mission: Did it still fit our group?

I know of quite a few PTA/ PTO's that dont have a 'Mission or Vision statement' in writing, per se; I believe everyone should, though. Its up to you and your membership to decide what your group wants to be.

I agree with dlf and think this next year we will revist it, and make a few more objectives.

Hi--I've posted our "purposes" or "mission" from our bylaws below. I think the reason you may not see too much on this thread...is that a mission needs to be very personal...and frankly it all comes from your vision as an organization. What do you see yourselves being and then you put the mission statement together in order to get there. So I'm not saying ours is the best...and I think that next year as prez we may revisit...but that is what a mission is all about....your PTO deciding what you're going to do...best wishes...d

a. To bring into closer relation the home and the school so that parents and teachers, school administrators and the community may cooperate mutually in the education of children.

b. To promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school and community.

c. To develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for all children the highest advantages in physical, mental and social education.

d. To encourage better communication between parents, teacher and school administration.

e. To provide those resources to the school that are not provided or not provided sufficiently for in the school budget and are deemed necessary or desirable by the staff for the support and education of the children at the school.

We're in the midst of revising ours, but here's what's been presented. It's very straightforward compared to our old one.

* To develop closer connections between school and home by encourageing parent involvement.
* To enhance the educatonal experience by supporting academic and enrichment activities.
* To improve the environment at our school by providing volunteer and financial support.

And from another PTO in my files:

* The purpose of this organization shall be to maintain an understanding, working relationship between the school and teh parents of the pupils in the school, and others interested in the objectives of this school.
* This organization is structured exclusively for educational purposes, including, for such purposes, the making of monetary distributions to parties that qualify as tax-exempt organizations.

I am wondering why there were not more replys to this. We are a 3year old PTO and have yet to sit down and write a mission statement. We would love to see other mission statements to give us some guidance. Thank you Shawn for yours - I copied it to take to our next meeting.
