The more parents involved the better. No 2 people can control the PTO. Most things come down to a vote and the Pres can't vote.
Having someone know the principal and how to approach them is important. I say sit back and watch and if there seems no conflict, congrats on a potential new officer.
I know that after you get to know the principal it is usually easier to approach them, but it can be intimidating.
Unless you have a reason to believe that a problem exists, (already seen an example of unfairness) then be happy that this parent is willing to jump in with both feet.
Every volunteer is valuable and dad's are very rare. If there is a reason for concern, then Kathie's right, find another candidate to run.
Kathie's right, there's really not much you can do about it, though I agree it certainly sounds like a recipe for trouble! Would this guy be keeping his other position? THEN I'd say it was a conflict of interest.
As long as the PTO bylaws are abided by, and it's not glaringly obvious that the principal or other group is being favored, there's little else you can do other than find someone to run against him!
Sticky, but what can you do? In our school it would work out okay because we really don't have any conflicts. When we disagree about something, we all speak our mind and then we vote. Someone doesn't lose my friendship if we don't agree on a PTA issue and I surely don't hold a grudge.
If you think it's going to be a problem, it's the same answer as if you had someone that you didn't think would make a good President - find another candidate. Nothing wrong with a real election!
I have a delicate situation, and I'm not sure if anyone has run into this here.
We got a new principal this year - she moved here from another state. It just so happens, that a family from her other school moved here as well, and one of the kids is enrolled at the school.
The dad (stay-at-home) is the chairperson of our School Site Committee (appointed) and wants to run for PTO president. He is also a close, personal friend of the principal. Many of us feel that this has created an unequal balance (not to mention a wee bit icky) set up at school.
