rosewood,
I'm curious about who owns/maintains/stocks the machine. Were any of your groups funds used as startup? Have those funds been recouped? What was the reason for starting this venture and putting the machine in the teachers lounge? I agree with JHB, but I think these questions should be considered.
I would let them take over the management of it and receive the funds. Our school has a social club for the staff and it allows them to have a small celebration each month for birthdays and such.
I would imagine that's exactly what they are thinking - that the money going in comes from them, so they would like to be the ones benefiting.
We do the same thing where I work (an office). Our coke machine is employee owned and stocked. We don't use a vending service. The price of soft drinks is higher than the actual cost (but still only 50 cents) and the excess is saved all year for our employee Christmas party.
I can see where, from their perspective, this would be a reasonable request.
My questions would be, are they going to take over the management of the machine? (Or do you have a vending service that gives you a cut?)
Our soft drink machine is also in the teachers lounge, they get the money. It is only fair since about 95% percent of the money that goes into the machine comes from them. I am not sure what they use the money for I think it goes towards supplies, but I think it would be great if they wanted to use it for baby showers and such. I've never heard of a social club. Usually if there is a death or something comes up they just go around and take up money at our school. I think that have an organized group for that is a great idea.
I was asked if our ptc would be willing to give the social club the money we earn from our pepsi machine(which is in the teachers lounge). The social club is only made up of staff members. It is for when someone has a baby, staff member has a death etc. Right now I am at a lose of words that they even came to us. Yes sometimes the teachers come to our meetings, but only because the principal feels they should. We just had a candle fundraiser and out of 640 students and 38 staff members. We only had 150 students and 3 staff members participate. Don't get me wrong we did fantastic, but at the beginning of the year, the staff has to pay dues into the social club, and now they are asking us for money.
