Hi again, I'm slightly calmer now. I am still upset that they plan to cut 18 million from the educational budget but yet have a separate budget to build 2 new high schools at the same time. If we needed both HS now that would be one thing, however, one would be going where there are NO houses yet. But that's another issue. I did talk to our principal today as she is the one who provided the info in the first place. Her suggestion was to send home a flier and make sure that the parents are at least aware. (so much has been in the press about the 2 HS that everything else has kind of been forgotten). And yes, you are correct in saying that part of the problem is with the state. The general assembly killed a bill that would have increased sales tax by 1/2 % (that 1/2% would have gone towards education) because they couldn't agree on which districts needed the most of it, also another story. Anyhow the long and the short of it is that the parents are getting a letter from the pta tomorrow. Maggie
I totally agree with the second poster...you must do your investigating first. You should never rally the troops until you have all the info. I know in our state the state government is cutting funding to the schools and it looks as if some of our new, wonderful teachers will be let go after this year...unless some of the older ones finally retire. Our district does not want to lose any teachers and they know our class sizes are growing dangerously high (our first grade has 28 kids with no teacher asst.) But without the state funding the district has to down size...Now if your state is doing what the great state of Michigan is then your beef has to with the "fat-cats" at the capital...not with your school board.
Right now you sound upset enough to just go on your roof top and yell it out!
Take a deep breathe with me......okay, think about this carefully. Can this be reversed? Probably not. Do you want to go to the press? a letter to the editor of your paper may help but an excusive article could be scary. Why are they cutting so much? That's a lot of money to just cut!
Put the picket sign away, put the blow horn away,
PUT THE LADDER BACK!!! There has to be a reason for the cut back-- a HUGE reason! Is there a way for you to talk/contact other PTO/PTA Presidents in the district to get their reaction? Remember the Boston Tea Party wasn't done with one guy dumpimg a bad spot of tea!
Hang in there Maggie... at least I didn't suggest running for a seat!!! 18 million.....WOW!
ARRRRGGGGGGGG!!!!! Our school board for our county has decided to cut 18 million dollars from the education budget. That means no new programs, no pay raises, class size will be HUGE! (shall I go on?) How can I as PTA pres get the word out short of literally calling everyone in the directory? thanks, maggie
