First and foremost, make sure this isn't an ugly out of control rumor. I have learned that our school district has guidlines that all the PTOs/PTAs in the district must follow, this might be worth checking into. Also, in our district, we held our first graduation for the Seniors at another school because we didn't have a large enough room and the school WAS CHARGED $50 hour for the use of the room. YES! Sure the parents were upset but we used THEIR employees etc. You may have some digging/research to do here before you light any fires! As far as rights and all that... I'm only 32 I don't know!! HAHAHAHA! Like I said, do some research.
I do want to give your group a hand for all the work you have been able to do!! Well done! Just please look into this before it gets outta hand. And be a fact finder, not a 'I'll show them!!' finder. Keep your head clear.....that's what I want to say!
Keep us posted too! This one is a new one!!
It seems odd to me. I would go to a school committee meeting and bring up the subject. I think it would be very strange to pay rent to
use a portion of the school if you are a school related group. If they're really serious, I would meet elsewhere. Our town has a lot of meeting space that is free for groups to use. The public library , for instance. I would fight this if I were you, though- what bad PR for the school board.
Wow! Have you received this information from the School Board or through gossip? I would try to get it direct and correct. I don't know where you are located, but our School Board is elected and represents all the district. It sounds like your Parent/Teacher/Student group is doing great things and I can't imagine anyone wanting to mess with it. We also meet at the school once a month. The only thing we pay for is childcare so that children can be brought to the meeting and cared for ($20 total). If your info is correct, circle the wagons and put up a fight! A letter to the editor of your local newspaper carries a lot of weight.

I am the treasurer of a PTSA that has been in place for over 10 years. We have a small school district and all schools Elementary through High School are in one area. Ours is an Elementary PTSA, as the other building Principals said they are not interested in having a PTA. I am proud of our group we have improved the safety of our parking lot by putting in a new sidewalk. We have supplied the elementary library with 100's of new books and tests on those books. We have raised quite a bit of money already this year and have turned around and made other contributions to improve the Childrens educational experience.
We meet in the Elementary library once a month. Now I don't know if the other building principals are upset because we have given so much to the Elementary, but it has come to my attention that friends of the other principals, who are on the School Board, are now going to propose that we pay rent to the School District. I want to know if this seems odd. My view is of course, here you have this group putting so much into the school with volunteer effort, saving the district money that they would otherwise have to spend, and now they want rent. How would you address this at the board meeting? Am I out of line? Are we just spoiled?
