Honor Roll Recognition Program

12 years 8 months ago - 12 years 8 months ago #160203 by ptrrabit
We have had honors assemblys every 9 weeks for many many years and for the kids that were on the honor roll the PTO sponsored a pizza treat as well as the perfect attendance kids. My kids have always strived for honors and 99% got them but on occasion they didn't and yes it did stink that they didn't get to participate but that made them work just little harder ask for more help to get better. But with the new administration that we now have our principle has decided that we will no longer do this because it is disruptive to the classroom and he said "really do they know what they are getting a slice of pizza for anyway? we had a few their and it was rewarding that they could throw that out there to show they do know what it is for. will NOT getting a piece of pizza cause these kids to fall from the honor roll doubtfull but you never know. kids like to be rewarded for their achievements.. Heck we all do!! so I find it disturbing that they would illiminate this incentive program but we have to do as they say. There will still be a recognition program just not on a quarterly basis like the kids and parents are used to but change is inevitable and a good thing just hard for some to take and yep I am one of them it is shocking at first but we will get through it.

Our PTA does NOT single out groups of children. Our motto like National PTA is everychild.onevoice. We have prizes for children who participate in our(PTA) events, but we leave the educational rewards to the school. We want the children to know that we are there for each and every single one of them and that grades play no factor in being recognized by our PTA. I really don't think it is a bad idea of what you are doing but does your membership approve of spending their money on only a certain # of children who meet a certain requirement? I would also worry that this may hurt the children who will never be on the honor roll: the kids who make the grade always get recognized and get the rewards and the ones who do average or sloghtly above get left at the curb. What about the ones who are failing or close to it- usually at this grade level it is becuase no one has reached this child. I would rather implement a program to reach out to the children who are at that level or a program for all the children. just my opinion..

Actually, my son walked in the door yesterday afternoon with his honor roll discount card. He's in 7th grade at a 7-12 jr/sr highschool. His card entitles him to various discounts at local stores, mall stores, and services. Just an example of some:

10% off at Dicks sporting goods
10% at old navy
(most of the stores in our local mall did 10%)
free coke with a purchase at McDonalds
15% off glasses and frames at local eye doc (yippee-i just ordered his new specs to the tune of $200)
monroe even offers one free oil change (vehicle must be registered to student-but still a great deal for older kids)

What surprised me most is how many of our local small businesses are participating. The hotdog place where all the kids hang out does free soda with a purchase.
One of the local pizza places did a one time large pizza for eat in only. Looks like sonny boy is taking the family out to dinner friday night!!

The card is sponsored by the PTSA, and the woman who chairs the program said most of the businesses that she approached were mnore than happy to participate. Each card expires Feb 8, and than a new card is issued after the next marking period. It is a hard plastic card with the childs name and homeroom. Student must have achieved 90+ average and the high honor roll 95+ receives a certificate of recognition along with the card. I think it is a great program (especially the eye doc discount) and the kids really seem to enjoy the benefits of doing well in school!

Our PTO has decided to fund a Honor Roll Recognition Program for students in Grades 3-5 (Honor Roll is only applicable in those grades). The school has always recognized the AA and AB Honor Rolls for these grades, and gives the students stickers to wear stating which Honor Roll they achieved. We'd like to "spice it up" a bit, i.e. by giving coupons to a local restaurant, homework passes, etc., depending upon which Honor Roll level achieved. Would love to hear from all of you as to what your PTO/school does for Honor Roll recognition. Many thanks and Happy Holidays!
