That is great that those are things that the teachers would like to see the PTO implementing at your school. We tried to do the same thing at our PTO. The Teacher rep was to get a majority poll of the teachers and find out what they would like to see us do. Well her feedback was they wanted us to fund a new playground. Turns out that was not a majority that is was a few teachers and the principal. All our PTO seems to get are requests to buy this and that never anything like events or seminars that can benefit everyone. We keep pushing for it though.
Karen,
Our school district has an education foundation that periodically offers similar workshops, on all types of parenting issues. They are free of charge. You may want to check with your school district.
We recently did a survey of our teachers on a variety of topics related to our parent group. (We are in the process of becoming a PTO!) One of the things we asked is for ideas from the teachers on what they would like to see us doing.
Many came back with offering workshops or seminars to parents on homework, developing good reading habits, character education, that type of stuff.
I think it is a great idea, but I am unsure of how to begin. Are there groups or well-known speakers for this type of stuff? Or do we work with the teachers to run the workshops?
I look forward to hearing about your experiences with this.
