We all know teachers are overworked and underpaid, but does that mean it's ok for them to just come to pto mtgs when they need money or a grant?
I disagree. I don't think they need to be "forced" to come to pto, but we do so much for them throughout the year: room parent, TAs, Teacher of the year, teacher luncheons, teacher appreciation etc..... so with all that, they still don't need to come to PTO mtgs? I don't think once a month for one hour is so much to ask.
Tim.... what is your opinion and what are your suggestions for encouraging teachers to attend PTO meetings?
We have 2 teacher reps, as well as, our principal that attend our monthly PTO meetings. As a matter of fact, one of our teachers is running for secretary on next years board. We are thrilled to have such great cooperation from our staff.
We have a great staff rep that comes to our meetings and helps at most fo our events, then we also get other staff members here and there. This question has been going on for years and people will argue both sides, you need to ask are they supporting your group in other ways? and is it that important they are there? Only you can answer those questions, whatever you do don't get into a negative feeling on this, save your energy for better things! Been there, done that!

Teachers are already overworked and underpaid. They can't be forced to be active with the PTO. We had one teacher who came to every meeting for many, many years. Last year, she had a horrible accident at home and broke her hip. She is still recovering, and we miss her so much. She is the only teacher that required her students to thank the PTO for all that we do for them by having her students draw pictures, write letters, and make cards. It is so nice to be appreciated.
communication. it starts at the top. you need to have a talk with your principal. include him/her in your Executive Board mtgs and ask for opinions and guidance for Executive decision making. he/she should remain neutral and doesn't provide a vote, but an opinion.
ask the principal if each grade level can be represented by a teacher. We do this and it works great.
involve your teachers, give them a survey or write them a letter asking for their opinions or what they would like to see the money raised used for.
when you give people ownership, you give them an opportunity to become involved.
We have teachers reps from each grade level at our meetings. The principals requires one from each grade to be there. They rotate so it ends up being once a year. Plus we have at least one meeting in the afternoon usually January when its hard for parents to get out in the snow.(gotta love Buffalo wheather LOL).
I like when they are there the offer insight at the meetings they give us a different perspective on things.
