I'll second that. I did some in depth digging into the 1023 for the PTO and confimed that we did not fall into that category. Even though it may feel like you're joined at the hip to your school, the typical PTO filing its 1023 is a stand-alone organization.
Fairly certain that question is intended for nonprofits that are closely aligned with a for-profit. IRS has been cracking down on companies doing that in the wrong way -- high-profile example = credit counseling services (often wolves in sheep's clothing).
I believe you're perfectly fine marking that as no.
Might think twice if your school is run by a for-profit operator, but even then, I think it would be no.
I've searched the boards and read every post I could find and did not come up with an answer so maybe someone can help?
I'm currently working on the new 1023 form and in part 8 line 15 it asks if we are closely connected with any organizations. I've read the instructions and think we might be IF the school is considered an organization because we operate in a coordinated manner with respect to facilities, programs, and other activities. I don't want to make this more complicated than it has to be...does anyone have any insight into this? Or can anyone share how they answered so that it was acceptable to the IRS?
