making money

Perhaps there is a bit of a misunderstanding going on here. My thought is that mommyangel means events that are not officially fundraisers cannot bring in any income in excess of $100.

For example the school might consider selling spirit wear 'at cost' but decide to round up to the nearest dollar amount for ease of accounting. If that habit of rounding up brings in $100 more than the actual cost of the shirts then the school would consider it a fundraiser.

I can understand a school limiting the number of fundraisers and strictly defining what they consider to be a fundraiser. The whole business of raising funds can get out of hand and parents would more likely complain to the school, specifically the principal, before complaining to the PTO.

That said, though, I think $100 is too limiting. Perhaps you could negotiate a wider margin? Maybe somewhere between $250 and $500?

That is crazy! $100!! Does anyone else feel like..."Why even bother?!" My word- a bake sale would make more than that at our school & we only have 170 kids & 40 staff!

if its not in the school district board policy manual (a public document that you have the right to see, by the way) then ask where does the rule come from, who made it up, why, and where is it documented.

public schhools have to make their rulebooks available to the public, according to the state dept of edu.

Who's telling you that? Maybe your school has a rule limiting the number of official "fundraisers" (by their defintion) that your group can do per year. That's not a generally understood rule. Probably something internal to your PTO.

Heck, a good fundraiser in our school should net $17-$25,000. We'd be in a pickle if we had to hold it to $100!

I am a new president and I was told that we can not make more than $100 dollars at any given event held by the PTO or else it would be considered a "fundraiser" Is this true and if so how do you control it without actually lossing money???
