PTO / School Board Relationship

"The School Board feels that by using the school name the PTO is under its direction. "

A name does not designate jurisidication, that seems a very curious position to take, the above. What does the school board want to do?

Your bylaws and constitution and school board manual outline accountabilities. And tax filing status and tax ID number will tell you if yours is independent or not, and even if your NOT a 501 corp., you can still be independent of the school board.

Again, you need to check your bylaws. And if you cant find them, neither can the school board, so they cant say your under their jurisdicaiton, can they.

ditto. we have the school's name in ours, but we are an independent 501c3, with no relationship to our admin

Same here, exactly as dlf says.

Not ours...we work under the auspices of the school as an independent organization with the principal as a representative on our board. d

We've just had a traumatic turnover of our PTO Board. The School Board feels that by using the school name the PTO is under its direction. We cannot locate the most recent bylaw revisions, only a version that's over five years old. I'm very new to the PTO and wondered if PTOs are normally directed by the School Board? Any input?
