I second that...
We also make sure they have had a background check with the school.

I strongly encourage you to have 3 authorized signers. Your group should decide who they are. We have the Prez, Trez, and one VP. We order our checks with 2 signature lines and the 2-signer policy is part of our bank account set up.

Every check, every check, every check is signed by 2 of the 3 authorized signers. Every check. If the check is to reimuburse one of the authorized signers, the other 2 sign the check. You never, never, never, never sign a blank check. And every transaction, every transaction, every transaction is supported by a complete papertrail (invoice, receipt, deposit ticket, plus filled-out transaction control form).

If your group is looking to establish its rules, particularly its financial control policies, you might want to get a copy of the Treasurer's Toolkit from this site. It has loads of info to help new treasurers.

in our group, all four (pres, vp, sec, and tres)of us have the authority, however we still need two signatures. i agree it's what works best for your group.

I'm the president of my group and I don't have check signing authority. It's not a rule, it just isn't convenient for our group. We have the treasurer and principal on the account. The school added an assistant principal last year, she assumed some PTO responsibilities and was added to the checking account. It's come in handy to have three authorized signers even though only two signatures are required on each check.

time to write some by-laws. our bank account has the pres and the tresurer names on it. the pres can keep track of what is going on, but the pres does not have a check book. this can be very hard when it comes time to go to the store, and the money comes out of pocket first.

We have a tresurer and a co-tresurer so would she really need to be on it? I'm trying to find some sort of rule that would help our group out because we don't have any set rules......yet
