I believe teachers are the best people to nominate officers! They know who is in the school and who really works for the kids benefit. Some parents like to come to meetings and are satisfied with that, but may never show up at any event to help out. We have elections today and I believe our teachers have been our best resource for new parent invoilvement. They have nominated several great parents into different positions for the election today! I am very happy to see our teachers becoming more involved. Our PTO has been a tough group this year, two "bad apples" can spoil the whole bunch. We have continued to be a successful group as far as raising money needed for the kids and being financially stable. Teachers have seen this for themselves and it has motivated them to generate new names so that our PTO can stay afloat. The current officers are not interested in dealing with the "drama" any longer. We are all professionals and it seems two parents have turned our PTO into a three ring circus, using this site as well as word of mouth to slander and belittle our organization. I can't beleive anyone would want to take the teachers out of the equation. Our teachers are so supportive and have such great ideas that carry us through our year. Thye know the kids well, some as well as the parents know their kids and our teachers are commited to their jobs and our school! PTO makes their life easier by providing money for what thye need to do for their classrooms and fieldtrips. We APPRICIATE OUR TEACHERS!!
ARe they really a Paretn Teacher Org or just a parent group??
You want to see alienation, our school board elections were for parents only and talk about peeved teachers!! We were voting on the SChool Board and they would be hiring a new Dirctor for the school but the teachers were asked to sit that one out!!
I would make a call to someone that knows you local regulations. Roberts Rules of Order do not address such issues as membership but local and state laws may and that is what you need.
If the by-law passes, boycot PTO events. I know but if you don't matter for a vote, how much more does your money count?

if yours is a public school, isnt the school and its operiatons bound by non discrimination polices? i should think the district P and Ps trump RRO. i should also think the principal or bldg supervisor, who approves the PTOs activities on school grounds, should be able to steer the PTO into making sound decisions. and ones which adhere to district policies of non discrimination.

I am a teacher at my school and often do things to help out our PTO and are invloved at meetings. We have no fee for joining or official membership processes other than you need to be a teacher at our school or a parent of a student at our school. All parents and teachers are invited to attend meetings. Our by laws state that everyone who attends the meetings has a right to vote on PTO issues. Up until this year, we have had very professional, responsible, commuicative and respectful parent presidents for our school's PTO organization. This year has been very different in respect to us having a new PTO president. Lately, our PTO parent officers have been very unhappy with lack of teacher and parent involvement. From a teacher point of view, there has been little comunication from our parent memebers and often we are not sure of when and where PTO events even occur. This year we haven't felt as if we know what the PTO expects from us nor what they need us to do. There is definately a communication break down! Our parent PTO members also have problems getting other parents to volunteer to help at event and we often feel like they are taking it out on us.
Our PTO officer parents are planning to adjust the by laws to state specifically that TEACHERS CANNOT VOTE ON PTO ISSUES. We feel that this creates a PO instead of a PTO and is discimination against our say in issues and matters including election of new officers. Can they do this to the teachers that they are supposed to be supporting? Help? We don't know if they can do this.
Thank you to all parents who help out at your children's schools. YOU MAKE THE DIFFERENCE! Without parents support, little of what we do is possible
