Our teachers and adminstration may vote and hold office in the PTO. The only requirement is that they pay their annual dues if they're going to run for an executive position (Pres, VP, etc).
They can always abstain if there is a direct conflict of interest (ie the teacher voting on something that will only benefit her class.)
I wonder what things you are voting on that might cause teachers to dole out retribution on their students.
Actually, I think more parents are likely to act badly when they care about an issue than teachers, so should parents not be given a vote either, for fear of retribution?

The reason I say teacher issues should be brought up with the admin or principal is because, if I am having a problem with participation, I don't want another staff member handling it wrong and making things worse. We have a class that continually forget to send home notes and the principal gave me approval to personally deliver the notes to the classroom and say these are to go home tonight or whatever. If I do mention this issues at a meeting it is to say something like, reps, please remind teachers in your pod to send home notes promptly. Most of the time, our whole group agrees/disagrees to something but I would like to think if a teacher took something out on my child that wouldn't bring it to a meeting but directly to the principal or up the chain of command.

Yes. Each committee has ONE vote in our by-laws. We have 3 teacher reps, but they make up one vote. The other committees are set up the same way (way's and means has 3 committee chairs that make up ONE vote). We have a total of 24 board members that if all are there make 13 votes.
My question about having teachers vote is what if a board member (parent) doesn't agree with a teacher, or vote with/like the teacher (for example, how funds hould be spent) the parent feels there could there be reprisals against the parent and, worse case, that parents child.
Although I would hope something like that wouldn't happen, could it? it could... Do I think it would, no not really.
Is it a valid point, I think so. Do I know what to do about it.... nope
