We held our PTO meeting, and agreed to start the term limits at the start of the next school year. Thanks for the advice. Our PTO had a bunch of inner termoil and argueing until this year. There are a few members who have been on the board for 3-5 years in the same position. One member feels I am trying to personally take her out, because I said I would like to run for the position that she currently holds. Any suggestions as to how to handle this? The last thing I want her to do is quit the PTO all together. The board generally feels the term limits may help in eliminating the clique feel that the PTO had in the past, and would benefit if the board members knew the different positions in case of someone resigned. We have made great strides this year in funding different projects for the staff & kids, and are very proud of that. We would like to keep going in a positive direction. Thank you!
The bylaws go into effect the minute you approve them. So the term limits that are stated in the new bylaws are the ones that you go by. If you haven't approved or voted on these new ones- and if you can make amendments, put a proviso in that states "all current officers will be allowed to serve ........"or what ever it is you want. Otherwise the woman you are arguing with is right.
I have the same question basically and I'm still confused. Our current By Laws allow for a 2 year term with elections next month. The By Laws are being reworked and everyone has agreed they will probably not be submitted for a vote until Sept. A parent- the one who wants all the changes including making the terms 1 year- advised those on the ballot that if we approve the changes they will be on the new term. I disagree - I think they should be on the terms that are in effect when they are elected. ??
We are currently changing our by-laws to include a term limit on all board positions. What I would like to know is, can the term limits be retroactive for any current board members, or does the term limits start at the next year???
