Ha Ha Closetwriter, Yes! you can get a nervous twitch and go a bit frickin nuts! I was Co President for 4 years! No one wanted to step up so I stayed on and on and ... you get the picture. We did not have term limits in our bylaws at the time, but I decided we needed to revise that because of all of the reasons in the previous post and yours as well. Now there are term limits to each individual board position of 2 years. (Again, if no on wants to step up though, you can stay on.) By having that in your bylaws, hopefully, people will come forward.
One of our previous Co Presidents was in for 7 years. Way to long, but again, no one wanted to step up.
Hi! I highly reccomend (as will the vast majority of people) the 2 year limit on the position.
This is done so that no person or persons can put a hold on the organization. These organizations belong to everyone and not to a sole person or a group of people that want the power to control everything for the next decade or the time frame of their choice.
The one loop hole in all of this is that typically that when a person's 2 year term is up, if no one steps up to take the position they then can continue to hold the position.
I would be taken aback by any individual who wanted to have no term limits. It reeks of someone who is on a power trip and has control issues!
We are coming up on elections in May can anyone suggest an easy way to do this? In the past all(including board memebers) wrote a name on a piece of paper and dropped it into a bucket. This year we are in need of somehting a little more formal any ideas?? (We are in need because 1 of our board memebers is being very political) our group is a PTO. and also does anyone have any sugesstions on why a position should not be held for more than 2 years by the same person. Our one individual is not wanting limitations on terms for anyone.
