Stacy, I'm finding there's a lot of work that goes into writing/rewriting/updating bylaws. Make sure you download the NEW 501c3 form as it states specific things that your bylaws have to say regarding what qualifies you to be an exempt group (i.e. charity...etc) and there also has to be specifics about the dispersement of any assets if the group was to dissolve. I'm in my 2nd year on our PTO.....have already moved up to President. I rewrote our bylaws and am currently attempting to do the 501c3. It's not clear on which specific schedules must be included so I'm doing lots of research. You can talk with groups from other schools and depending on your district, you may also have a liaison at the school district itself who can help you out or who may have info and contacts for you.
Thanks. That's pretty much what I did, a search for PTO bylaws, yip there were about a million. Two years ago our PTO about dissolved, too. I have worked very hard and trying to breath life back into it, so far so good. Thanks again for the post.
Hi, Stacy... I'm new to this as well so I may not have a lot of advice. I'm going to be writing our by-laws from scratch as our PTO has not functioned in about five years and the school has no copies of the former by-laws. I would not recreate the wheel, and would probably amend the existing by-laws. I'm not sure about and requirements of your state; I'd suggest contacting a neighboring school or district's PTO for advice there. And as far as what must or should be in your bi-laws, I'd suggest searching the archives here... many people have posted what they have in theirs. Also, I saw it posted somewhere that if you google for PTO or PTA bi-laws, you will get hundreds of examples.
I'm new to this. I have started the 501c3 process we are incorporated, but our bylaws are dated 1994, therefore I am trying to revise them. Are there any guidelines? Do they have to be seen by an attorney? Do I just use the old ones to create the revision? I know I'm full of questions, but this is all a learning process for me. I'm in Missouri, does that make a difference in revising my bylaws? Any help will be appreciated!!! What has to be in our bylaws?
Thank you for any help!!!
